The barefoot civil servant

I worked with Mary at the Home Office in the late 1970s, early 1980s. I could always tell when Mary was relaxed, She would slip off her shoes during the day. One memory that sticks out springs to mind: I did not witness the following but I was told by colleagues they remembered it for several years. I was organising my wedding. A date had been fixed and I wanted to invite someone from the office - Mary being the top of my list . I was out of the office and phoned to ask if she and Edwin were free on 10 May 1980. "why?" - I am getting married to Jenni. Squeal of delight down the phone. I finish the call - Mary is OK with the date. She then proceeded to run round the office saying "John's getting married, John's getting married".

I remember her for her warmth and the friendly professionalism she always employed at work.
